As we have seen, education in virtue is the main safeguard in the Republic against the misuse of political authority. Auxiliaries and rulers are given an elaborate education in music and gymnastic. The rulers are carefully selected and tested for the role they are to perform. They will be "those who in their whole life show the greatest eagerness to do what is for the good of their country [polis]" (412d-e).

The U.S. Constitution uses a different safeguard: "The interest of the man must be connected with the constitutional rights of the place" (Federalist 51). In other words, the interest of one officeholder in seeking to increase his power must be checked by the interest of another in doing the same. This is the basis for the constitutional system of checks and balances.

Question 1. Identify 1-2 advantage(s) in each kind of safeguard, then weigh these advantages against each other.

Question 2. Which advantage outweighs the other? and how did you conclude this?
