Assignment: Exploring Inequality Within a Social Problem

When examining the social problems that affect different populations, you will notice that instances of inequality are usually entwined within these social problems. In chapter 8 of your text, Henslin describes how prejudice, discrimination, and racial-ethnic violence are unfortunate facts of life. As an advocate in the human service field, you must understand why race is a social category and be able to identify inequality within a social problem.

Identify a Social Problem

• Identify a social problem related to inequality (race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, mental illness, income, etc.).
• Include additional bullet points to elaborate on at least one objective condition and one subjective concern related to the social problem.
• Provide a detailed explanation of the social problem you have chosen and explain why you have chosen this particular social problem.

Influences of a Social Problem

• Identify three influences that contribute to the emergence of this social problem.
• Cite a specific resource for each influence that supports this claim.
• Describe how each influence directly relates to the social problem.

Key Legislation

• Identify at least two legislations aimed at addressing this social problem.
• Include additional bullet points to elaborate on the key concepts of the legislation.
• Explain how each legislation can help reduce or eliminate the inequality within your identified social problem.

Sociological Theories

• Explain each of the three theories as it relates to the social problem.
• Discuss in detail how each theory (symbolic interactionalism, functionalism, and conflict theory) may perceive the social problem.

Human Services Intervention

• Identify three actions a human service professional can take when faced with inequalities within a social problem.
• Explain how you, as a human services professional, can implement these actions to advocate for those negatively impacted by the inequalities within your identified social problem.
