Intervention Strategies

In this tutorial you will be spending some time discussing the properties of three different intervention strategies you encounter throughout the module.

By the end of this tutorial you should be able to:

• Describe the key features of three different types of intervention: primary, secondary and tertiary.
• Critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses, advantages and disadvantages, of each type of intervention.
• In your evaluation (see 2. above) you will be able to consider a range of different stakeholder perspectives.

You will be tasked with making the arguments in favour of one approach, and against other approaches.

The aim of this tutorial is not to make a definitive case for which type of intervention is best but rather to give you the opportunity to explore the properties of them all. This should help you to develop your understanding of not only the different types of intervention but also how they might be used as part of an overall intervention strategy in work settings.

The tutorial builds on the content, so you should review that content in advance. Any further optionalreading should focus on page 425-437 in Arnold et al. (2016) Work psychology: Understanding human behaviour in the workplace (6th Edition). This is available online via StarPlus.

On the next page you will find a table to help you structure your thoughts before and during the tutorial. You do not have to use this table if you do not want to.

Task A

You will be working in small groups for 15 minutes to identify the strengths and advantages of the intervention strategy assigned to you. This will either be primary, secondary, or tertiary intervention. Consider a range of stakeholder perspectives when carrying out your analysis and formulating your arguments.

Be ready to present, briefly and verbally, your analysis and arguments to the other groups. Be ready to defend your analysis from criticism by the other groups.

Task B

You will then spend a further 10 minutes identifying the potential problems with the other two types of intervention, ready to use these to challenge the analysis presented by the other groups.

At the end I will ask you to vote for which group presented the most solid, robust and convincing arguments. But you're not allowed to vote for your own group!

Requirements:

This assignment requires you to present your work in two sections.

Section I: Recommendations for Leaders and Managers (up to 1,500 words): Identify a topic from the module that has especially captured your attention and interest. Summarise in up to 500 words the practical implications of theory and research into this topic for leaders and managers in organisations who have a responsibility for the well-being of other employees. Then write up to 1,000 words that provide a succinct critical evaluation and summary of the research and theories that led you to the practical implications you identified (i.e., the practical implications in the first 500 words of this section).

Section II: Recommendations for Employees (up to 1,500 words): Identify a second topic from the module that has especially captured your attention and interest. This topic must be substantially and obviously different to the topic you selected for Section 1. Summarise in up to 500 words the practical implications of theory and research into this topic for employees seeking to use it to protect and / or enhance their own well-being. Then write up to 1,000 words that provide a succinct critical evaluation and summary of the research and theories that led you to the practical implications you have identified (i.e., the practical implications in the first 500 words of this section).

Each Section must have two sub-headings: ‘Practical Implications' and ‘Critical Review of Research and Theories'. This means your work will have four sub-headings in total. You may choose to add more sub-headings within each section if you feel this would enhance the presentation and clarity of your work. When preparing your assignment, it may help you to first focus your efforts on the Critical Reviews of Research and Theories: this should help you to identify the practical implications you describe under the first sub-heading of each Section. Note: the contents presented under the Practical Implications do not need to be re-iterated in the Critical Review of Research and Theories.

You may have questions about your choice of topics for this assignment. You will be given many opportunities during the module to discuss and to get feedback on and your choice of topics. There is a dedicated forum on Blackboard where you can ask questions about your topic choices, and this should be used whenever possible. Optional drop-in sessions will also be offered to allow you to discuss your choices.
