Your Topic MUST BE a question of law and not a general statement/singular phrase(Can you find a text to analyze/ a doctrine to study / a case to comment on / a provision to analyse etc.)

The topic question MUST NOT EXCEED 50 WORDS.

Your primary task for the first submission is to identify a reading from the course and then think of a topic ( in the form of a question). Please remember your topic should be a question of law and not a question of fact or a political question.

As you prepare your abstracts, here are some guidelines to follow.

1. The text should be no more than 250 words;

2. The idea is that you identify the central lines of arguments and methods that your draft and final essay will engage with and write them out;

3. Also include references and materials (in detail, with hyperlinks, paragraph and page numbers included as the case may be);

4. Making this abstract serves the purpose of you stating clearly what the boundaries of your research are and helping us glimpse the draft paper that you will subsequently submit;

5. This is important because until you convey to us exactly what it is you intend to argue in your draft paper, we cannot provide helpful inputs or comments;

6. Please make sure that your abstract includes a clear title / heading for the draft / final essay.

Here is an illustrative, partially written example of what we are looking for in your writing. (This is an example from International Law)

Topic: Is Tibet a “state” under the current framework of statehood in international law”

Title: Tibet’s claim to statehood in 21st century international law: a critical evaluation

Abstract:

The paper will critically examine the two established theories of statehood in customary international law (constitutive theory and declaratory theory) as well as the existing treatylaw and resolutions (Montevideo Convention 1933, UN GA Res 1514, 1541, 2625) on this subject…. The purpose of this will be create a shortlist of the most accepted set of criteria for an entity to sustain a claim to sovereignty in modern international law…. Having selected this set, the paper will focus on testing each criteria in the set against relevant case law in self-determination and the established jurisprudence on statehood (Wall Advisory Opinion, Kosovo Advisory Opinion, UN Charter interpreted…) Criteria such as territory and government will be studied with reference to ongoing and historical claims made in examples of contested sovereignty. The method of analyzing Tibet’s claim will finally be a balance of available criteria in the set after comparing with other cases….

Word Limit for the Research Paper is maximum 3500 words inclusive of footnotes.
