Instruction
As a public health practitioner, you may be asked to inform the public about the ambient conditions and public health effects of air pollution within your jurisdiction. This may be a routine communication or a response to an event or concern about air pollution. Either way, the communication must contain sufficient information such that someone without scientific background can read and understand it without further explanation. Informing the public may include identifying, reviewing, and presenting data, such as air quality data.
For this assignment, you are asked to identify an air-quality issue and select communication strategies for different audiences. This written assignment should contain the following components.
Introduction: Identify a public health air quality problem. The focus of this assignment is on identifying an air quality issue in a particular geographic region of your choice. Consider the air quality in the city, region, or state where you live (or, you could choose a different location that is of interest to you), and how this relates to public health.
Provide a brief (1-2 paragraph) description of the air quality issue. You are encouraged to use figures, tables or graphs to augment your description of your chosen air quality issue. Citations for your references are required.
Select communication strategies for public health information: A large part of public health is on effective, clear, and concise dissemination of information. One of the biggest challenges of this is on disseminating information to different audiences. For each of the following groups, choose an appropriate communication strategy to disseminate information on the public health air quality problem that you've identified.
- Minorities
- Children
- Legislators
- Local community groups (e.g., NGO's working in your community)
Describe how your selected communication strategy is appropriate for communicating the public health risk, resources, and evidence based solutions. You should have 1 paragraph for each group listed above, for a total of 4 paragraphs.
Summary/Conclusion: In your final paragraph, summarize your recommendations by describing how different media (that you chose above) are appropriate for different populations depending on health literacy.
Below are websites that have air pollution data searchable by location:
• EPA: Air Data
• AirNow: Focused on current air quality conditions, but archives are available by air monitoring site.
• Air Pollution in the World: Real Time Air Quality Map
• American Lung Association: State of the Air
• If you are looking for international data, see WHO's Ambient (outdoor) air pollution in cities database.
