Essay: Literary Analysis
Rhetorical Situation:
Purpose: To carefully examine one of the following readings from this course:
Mark O'Brien's "The Man in the Iron Lung," "Breathing," or "The Morning Routine"
"Good Country People," by Flannery O'Connor
"The Yellow Wallpaper," by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
"Helen Keller," by Langston Hughes
"My Left Foot," by Christie Brown
"Haben," by Heben Girma
"Buried Voice," by Leroy Moore
You are also going to research and incorporate two academic articles that corroborate your thesis. As with any analysis, this essay requires you to break the subject down into its component parts. Examining the different elements of a piece of literature is not an end in itself but rather a process to help you better appreciate and understand the work of literature as a whole. The incorporation of academic articles will also help develop a better understanding of the academic conversation with regard to the story begin analyzed.
Audience: Readers of a literary academic journal, which would include college students as well as English professors and various other professionals in the educational community. This group will be familiar with these rather iconic modern American short stories.
Conventions: Use MLA format including both in-text citations and works cited page. Find a minimum of 2 academic articles from the NFC databases that support your analysis. You must incorporate the sources in your paper, and they must be included in your works cited page. Maintain an academic tone- use third person point of view and avoid contractions and slang. (minimum page count-6-9 pages pages plus a works cited page).
Identify a particular theme (like things are not what they seem) of the story you choose or identify a theme shared by both stories. List various ways the author suggests that theme through the actions and dialogue of the characters, the setting, and the overall plot. You may wish to approach your analysis from one of the lenses learned in this course, such as intersectionality, or disability, for instance. Specifically, how does intersectionality or disability play a role in the particular text you have chosen to write about? Develop a thesis based on this theme and begin research to find academic articles that will support your thesis. Then consider the best way to organize all the information to clearly convey your thesis. Remember you will want to introduce the work(s) and author(s) in the beginning, but a plot summary is not necessary (remember your audience).
