Oral Presentation - Communication and Scholarship

Prepare an 8-10 minute recorded oral presentation using PowerPoint. Your presentation will focus on explaining and demonstrating the importance of the following three academic skills to a hypothetical target audience:

(a) Why peer-reviewed research is needed to support discussion and/or arguments (showing an example of what peer-reviewed research is, and how to locate it)

(b) Why academic writing has a formal style and tone (showing a brief example you have written yourself to demonstrate this skill)

(c) Why it is vital to acknowledge sources of information (showing examples of how to do in-text citations and reference list entries - for either Harvard or APA 7). Note: While you will have a reference list at the end of your presentation, you will discuss the method for doing this in the body of your speech, providing some example citations and reference entries.

PRESENTATION STRUCTURE

Pay particular attention to the marking criteria sheet (linked at the top of these instructions) and note the marks for structure with your introduction, body and conclusion. The following are the minimum requirements in each section:
• Introduction - Welcome a specific hypothetical audience (so it is clear to the marker exactly who your target group is), provide a brief overview of the three main points you intend to cover in the body of the speech, and explain how or why this information will be beneficial to your audience.
• Body - Explain the three different academic skills, supported by at least one written cited academic source for each to acknowledge where you have sourced your information. Provide examples and/or demonstrations of each of the three academic skills so your target audience can clearly see how these skills could be applied.
• Conclusion - Briefly reiterate the outcomes of the three main points from the body of the speech and conclude on a positive note for your target audience.

AUDIENCE ANALYSIS
Identify a hypothetical target audience. For example, you may choose to address a group of Year 12 students who are about to start their university degree, or a group of mature-aged students who are in their first semester of study. You may think of a different target audience group, but just make sure they are relevant for the goals of your presentation. Your role as the presenter is to explain and demonstrate the academic skills a person would need to learn when they first attend university. You will be marked on audience analysis so your delivery style, content and visuals should be appropriate for that particular demographic. Therefore, your target audience group should not be too broad.

RESEARCH
Include a reference list (not bibliography) of at least three academic sources that you have cited in your presentation. You should have at least one different cited academic source to support the discussion of each of the three academic skills. For example, when you are discussing why academic writing has a formal tone and use of third person, you would locate an academic source that focuses on this area. The citations should appear on the relevant slides in your PPT presentation. You can use your course textbook as one of these sources but not the course modules. Use the USQ Library for your research and look for journal articles and/or textbooks. In this course, you can use either Harvard or APA 7 referencing styles. You should put your reference list on the final slide(s) of your presentation rather than uploading this in a separate document.

VISUAL COMPONENT
Visuals are an important part of oral presentations, so aim to be creative! PowerPoint is easy to use and you can choose from a range of templates plus add images to help retain audience interest during your talk. You do not need to film yourself presenting; instead you can create a PowerPoint presentation and have audio embedded on the slides. Aim to upload just one file that contains all the visual and audio content together to ensure a seamless presentation for the marker. If you are not familiar with PowerPoint then the resources below will help get you on track.
