Assignment:
Identify a healthcare system or entity (further referenced as "the organization") that is impacted by a problem. Ensure when you are identifying your business problem that you are looking at something that is at a level that can be completed during this course. For example, trying to solve telehealth in general is not a problem that is solvable during the course. Instead, focus on something specific such as "improving telehealth access for diabetic patients to improve A1c monitoring" or "expanding telehealth access for a pediatric clinic." When developing your business problem, consider the concepts in the following areas in the following areas:
Overview of Healthcare Data and Applications
- Define and analyze healthcare applications utilized by the organization in relation to the problem identified.
- Define the high-level categories of data collected by the organization in relation to the problem identified.
- Analyze any outward connections and limitations to the applications or data collected (i.e. health information exchanges, grant requirements, partners).
Define the Business Problem
Identify the problem and subsequent need of the organization.
- A problem should be an identified issue that has come up - do not start with a "solution" or product.
- The "need" should be specific to meet an outcome (i.e. patients need to submit A1c data to the provider at least weekly; pediatric clinic needs at least 60% of patients/families signed up for the patient portal for telehealth expansion).
Utilize a business environmental analysis tool to determine the business problem (i.e. SWOT, PESTEL, Porter's Five Forces).
- Utilize infographics or images to help convey messaging to stake holders customize this to the needs of the organization and problem at hand
What organizational strategic goal(s) does this align to?
- Example of organizational strategic goals include having patient experience scores through CAHPS surveys to identify patient satisfaction or quality indicators like diabetic patients with controlled A1c measures.
Make a concise business problem statement
Consider this resource if you are having trouble writing the problem statement: Defining Problems: The Most Important Business Skill You've Never Been Taught (entrepreneur.com).
A sample problem statement for the examples above:
- Our clinic is not achieving the quality outcome goal of 70% of diabetics with controlled A1c or treatment plans (currently at 52%). One such problem is that patient A1c levels are not regularly collected to show controlled levels or adherence to treatment plans. One identified barrier is that patients do not have an accessible way through telehealth to provide A1c data to providers and discuss treatment plans.
- Our pediatric clinic CAHPS scores and survey data show a low satisfaction rate with communication to providers and access to treatment away from the clinic. Upon review of our clinical systems, we identified only 27% of patients/families are registered for the online portal of our electronic health record (EHR). By improving the enrollment into the portal and communicating the functionality of the portal to families and patients, we can improve these gaps in our patient satisfaction.
Note in the examples above that we are specific with a measure, clear on where the issue lies, and what we believe is a place to start working on analysis for gaps.
If you do not have all information or cannot provide it due to the health organization's request on privacy, you can use estimate data. However, identify how you would determine this information if it were not an estimate.
