Dominant discourses are common sense assumptions we take for granted; they often go unquestioned. Dominant discourses support dominant ideologies (e.g., "Men should be the heads of families," is a dominant discourse that supports patriarchal and heterosexist religious and social ideologies. It is patriarchal because it arbitrarily elevates men to a higher social status; it is heterosexist because it assumes all families are heterosexual). Dominant discourses legitimize discriminatory policies and practices; these in turn reinforce harmful norms within social institutions and society. Consequently, social problems persist and are difficult to challenge and change.
For the Media Discussion Post and Response Assignment you will be responding to individual group members within your major assignment group.
Each group member must find an online article written between Jan.2021 - Mar. 2022 that is about the social problem your group is examining for the major assignment. Each group member must find a different article. Answer the following questions:
1) Identify a dominant discourse embedded within the article and identify a dominant ideology that is connected to the dominant discourse.
2) Is the article biased? Does it promote stereotypes? Does is contain misinformation? Is it fact and evidence based? What common sense assumptions about the economic system, gender, race, class or sexuality or the environment does it promote?
Please Note: The article you choose need not promote dominant discourses, if the article you decide to examine is critical of the social problem then answer these questions instead:
1) Identify a counter discourse embedded within the article and identify a transformative ideology that is connected to the counter discourse.
2) How is article fact and evidence based? How does it challenge stereotypes and misinformation? How does it critique common sense assumptions about the economy, gender, race, class or sexuality or the environment?
Post one original reflection on the question above and two separate follow up responses to posts made by other group members.
When answering please number your questions. Question 1 need only be a sentence, whereas Question 2 should be a paragraph. Focus on substance, not word count.
Both your post and 2 responses to peers must reference relevant course concepts from that week's lesson and assigned readings.
Your responses and post must engage course concepts by demonstrating your understanding of the relevant social analysis and media literacy terminology and concepts.
Provide citations of the article and other sources used including course lessons and the OER in APA format.
Note: You will have one week to submit your posts from the date the discussion board opens. Once the discussion forum is locked, posts will no longer be accepted for submission. Late posts receive a grade of zero.
