Dominant discourses are common sense assumptions we take for granted; they often go unquestioned. Dominant discourses support dominant ideologies (e.g., "Men should be the heads of families," is a dominant discourse that supports patriarchal and heterosexist religious and social ideologies. It is patriarchal because it arbitrarily elevates men to a higher social status; it is heterosexist because it assumes all families are heterosexual). Dominant discourses legitimize discriminatory policies and practices; these in turn reinforce harmful norms within social institutions and society. Consequently, social problems persist and are difficult to challenge and change.
