I. THE WRITING ASSIGNMENT OVERVIEW - Position Paper: Effecting Positive Local Change in a GlobalizedWorld
Write an 8-10 page scholarly argument that identifies a contemporary global problem/issue and identify a local solution/response that addresses that problem/issue. The final paper must:
1. Identifya contemporary global problem that impacts more than one region in theworld.
2. Pose an open-ended question (Level 3) that will lead you to more than one possible solution or response, found in scholarship, about the problem/issue or responses to theproblem/issue
3. Answer the question by considering alternate or opposing views that you find in scholarship and credible primary and secondary sources. Demonstrate the credibility of your sources.
4. Take a position (thesis) about how to effect positive change to respond to that issue/problem at the local level, either addressing a global problem that has manifested at the local level or taking localaction to address a global problem. "Local" context can include campus, neighborhood, community, city, region).
Back up your position with compelling and logical reasons based on research and the analysis of credible sources and evidence (typically in the form of counterargument and rebuttal).
You will be evaluated on your use of concrete, empirical and credible evidence. You can apply a solution or suggest a response that is offered by one of the scholars, or you can advance a solution on our own based on your critical assessment of the scholarship and evidence. The goal is to write a strong argument that is grounded in scholarship and that is convincing with credibleevidence.
5. Discuss the significance of your position in effecting positive change in our contemporary globalized world.

This is the assignment that needs to be done! Please go over it!
1. Prompt Assignment #1: Research Question & Annotated Bibliography(RQAB)
Purpose: In this assignment, you will write a 4-5 Annotated Bibliography about your initial research and demonstrate how this research has led to a Level-3 Research Question about solutions to contemporary global issue/problem that you have identified.
- The purpose of this assignment is to help you: a) identify a contemporary global problem/issue, b) construct a Level-3 research question addressing that problem/issue, c) identify in scholarly sources some relevant positions on solutions or recommendations to address the problem/issue to answer the Level-3 question, and d) articulate how your sources demonstrate that you have a good research project for this course.
Topic and Research Question:
In one or two paragraphs, state your topic and the precise, Level-3 research question that addresses a contemporary global problem/issue and that your paper will answer.
• To identify a topic, you mightconsult:
o Yourinterests
o The MMW 122 Research Areas, Surviving a Research Paper and Credible Sources two-minute videos posted on the Lecture TritonEdsite
o Your coursesyllabus
o Assigned course readings and textbook (see especially bibliographies and textbookheadings)
o Books and journals in the stacks at GeiselLibrary
o Your professor and yourTA
• To develop a research question, READ, READ, READ scholarly, peer-reviewed sources about a contemporary global topic, issue or problem that interests you. This problem/issue must impact more than one region in the world. As you read, notice:
o What you find reallyinteresting
o What topics are important toyou
o What you would like to understandbetter
o What you think others should know, find important, or understandbetter
• Sources for this assignment must include only scholarlysources.
•Your research question must be a Level-3 question: a question that can be developed and answered with scholarly research, but that cannot be definitivelyanswered.
What is "global"? Ours is a "global" world as a result of globalization. Wikipedia defines globalization as "the increasing interaction of people, states, or countries through the growth of the international flow of money, ideas, and culture; primarily an economic process of integration that has social and cultural aspects"
("Globalization," 1). For the purposes of this paper, a global issue/problem is one that is evident through the interaction of multiple regions in the world. You must demonstrate/explain the global context (how it is global) and the effects that it has on the regions you will study.
What is an Annotated Bibliography? "An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.
Annotations are descriptive and critical; they expose the author's point of view, clarity and appropriateness of expression, and authority."(Cornell University Library's "How to Prepare an Annotated Bibliography"). See the Sample Research Question and Annotated Bibliography that is posted on your course TritonEd site.
The Assignment:
1. Attend a required Source Credibility Library Workshop at the Geisel Library, Classroom 1. For schedule see TritonEdsite.
2. Submit an annotated bibliography to demonstrate that there are at least two positions/sides relatedto solutions to the problem/issue and that you have reviewed scholarship that supports both (all) sides. Your annotated bibliographyshould:
• include at least 6 scholarly, peer-reviewed sources (related to your question) that you haveread
• demonstrate your familiarity with each source
• demonstrate the credibility of eachsource
• demonstrate all of the important positions/sides on how to address/solve the problem you are studying
• demonstrate how each source is useful to yourquestion
• Contain, in your ownwords:
o an overview of each author andsource
o an overview of the source's main arguments on your topic and how these represent a position/side
o a discussion of how the author's arguments could be used to formulate an answer to your research question
• include citations if, in your exposition of your topic and research question, you introduce words, facts, ideas, and arguments drawn from sources you haveread.
