Communication Conflict and Climate: Writing Prompt 3 Assignment Directions Spring 2023 As you read the script that follows,
Imagine that you are meeting up with your friend Charlie at a local coffee shop. You should pretend that Charlie is a real-life friend whom you have known for some time; that is, you have history together. You have not seen each other for a while, and Charlie asked if you two could meet to talk about some relationship issues between Charlie and Kate, Charlie worries they are starting to grow apart. You have not shared this with Charlie, but you and your significant other, Skylar, have also been having issues, so you are hopeful that you both can share some things and possibly work out how to handle your respective situations.
Coffee shop scenario: You and your friend Charlie are having coffee at a local coffee shop. Charlie invited you there to talk.
Charlie: Kate and I aren't ourselves anymore. She isn't answering my texts, we argue constantly and she doesn't laugh at my jokes anymore. What do you think I should do?
You: Maybe Kate just needs some space.
Charlie: You're probably right. What's happening with you and Skylar?
You: Well, Skylar won't take me to meet their family, which hurts my feelings. --Charlie's phone rings answers immediately because it is Charlie's girlfriend, Kate. Charlie gets up and walks to the bathroom. Charlie comes back after approximately 2 minutes.
Charlie: I have to go. Kate wants to talk.
You: (Confused) Okay. Well, I wanted to talk and I drove 45 minutes to get here.
Charlie: Oh. (Looking puzzled) Do you really think Skylar's family will be fun? I mean...Skylar is pretty lame. I need to go; I don't want to keep Kate waiting. (Pointing at the mess on the table) You got this, right? Bye. --You are left alone with Charlie's untouched coffee cup and muffin. You sigh and clean up the table. The central theme or thesis for this paper involves three main ideas: conflict is often caused by expectancy violations, we often mismanage conflict by not knowing the appropriate conflict resolution strategy to use, and when we do this, we can end up causing a destructive relationship climate that can damage our relationships with others. Based on this theme, 3 to 4-page paper in which you develop and analyze the three main ideas.
- Identify the expectancy violation between you and your friend based on the Coffee Shop Scenario. Name, define, cite, and explain the expectancy violation. Be sure to support your reasoning with evidence.
- Identify the Conflict Management Strategy that you exhibited in the following scenario. Define and explain that strategy. Use examples from the scenario as well as evidence from the textbook to justify your response
- Identify a conflict management strategy that you could have used instead to get your needs met and manage the conflict in a healthy way. Re-write the script and be specific here. Identify what you could have said that would improve the interaction based on the conflict management strategy you have selected. Then discuss what interpersonal communication behaviors both verbally and nonverbally that you could have enacted to demonstrate that conflict management strategy. Choose specific skills: define and cite them and apply them to the situation
- Suggest one of Gibb's supportive behaviors that you could employ in future interactions to improve the climate of the relationship with your friend.
- Now imagine the situation from your friend's perspective. Clearly explain how and why your friend sees this situation differently than you do. How could you empathize with your friend? What is your experience in your friend's situation?
• Be certain that you include the textbook definitions of the concepts you use and that you cite these definitions correctly. A reference list or works cited should be included at the end of your paper.
