The Critical Appraisal of Evidence
• Use subheadings to focus your critiques
• Identifying the Clinical Problem and Research Question (150 words):
• Accurately and concisely describe the clinical problem of both articles. Correctly state the research question or study hypothesis and study aims of both articles.
• Provide a brief summary of all key elements of justification correctly - noting significance of the problem, current research knowledge about the problem and gaps in the research of both articles.
Critical Appraisal (600 words)
Correctly answers all CASP questions regarding the RELIABILITY of the studies (This information will come from Section
A of the CASP Checklist).
Identifies and describes the STRENGHTS AND WEAKNESSES of the study and discusses whether BIASES are present in how the study was undertaken (METHODOLOGY) of both studies (This information will come from Section A & Section B of the CASP Checklist).
Provides a detailed explanation of how the RESEARCH FINDINGS (results) have answered the research question, study hypothesis or aims of both studies. (This information will come from Section C of the CASP Checklist).
States correctly at least two LIMITATIONS of the studies (as stated by the authors) in their discussion section and clearly state how these limitations may impact on the implementation of the research findings in clinical practice.
The Critical Appraisal of Evidence
• Appraisal Summary(150 words)
• The appraisal summary is included stating a conclusion of the methodological rigour of both the publications.
• CASP Checklist
All sections of the CASP Checklist are correctly answered and a detailed rationale to each CASP question is provided for both papers (Part A, Part B, Pan C and Part D and Appraisal Summary).
• Application - Outcomes and Methodological Rigour (300 words)
• Accurately describes all outcomes of both of the studies
• Demonstrates effective problem solving in describing the critical appraisal of publications and accurately applies the critical appraisal to how the research publications have been written up in both articles.
• Reference List
• Minimum 4 references are required
• You will also need to reference both articles you are appraising and the GASP Checklist
