Assignment - The potential for Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) to transform the industry& the Application of MMC to a residential hospital project

Learning Outcome 1: Formulate a project that will provide a solution to an identified problem.

Learning Outcome 2: Manage a project within agreed timescales and specification, documenting the process throughout.

Learning Outcome 3: Evaluate potential project management solutions.

Learning Outcome 4: Produce a project report and deliver a presentation of the final project outcomes.

Assignment Brief:

Scenario: "Residential Hospital in Derbyshire"

The construction industry must help to build a world that will improve the lives of future generations and use eco-friendly methods. Working sustainably involves meeting demands of the expanding population, as well as supporting the environment in the long-term.

You have recently gained employment as an Assistant Project Manager for a large general contracting firm. The firm specialises in community/ government projects. As part of the company's drive to provide better services to clients, they are seeking to improve the way that they are able to support greater sustainability in the projects that they undertake.

Your first project with this firm is the construction of a community hospital and an accommodation suitable for doctors and nurses in Derbyshire (guiding floor plans are included). For the report, you may choose to focus on either the hospital building or the medical staff accommodation building. Please note the floor plans given below are only a rough guide and you may choose another appropriate floor plan for either building. The building you will choose to design will comprise of four floors with very similar floor plans. You should propose a suitable site for the project considering its logistics.

Your final report should consider the overall project process and advise on project management solutions. The report should include the following:

Clearly set out the aims of your project. You should identify the main components of your project and define these in a clear project specification. In addition, you will need to explain why clear specification of the project is key to a successful outcome.

Develop your project work through an iterative process. The first idea is seldom the best idea and all ideas can be developed further. You should keep notes of the process and your progress throughout the project in a Logbook or reflective journal. The Logbook should include a summary of the project developments and the research you have carried out every week (with dates), and summary of the progress meetings you had with the unit tutor. This will be submitted as part of your final report and serves as an important record of your development process.

You should try your best to comply with the National Health Service (NHS) Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs), Health Building Notes (HBN) and Building Regulation Approved Documents. Your report should also investigate the merits of offsite construction and its impact on the sustainability of the project.

During the development of the project, you are asked to identify the potential resources, costs and timescale required to implement the chosen solution aligned with the sustainability demands. You should describe a range of appropriate techniques for generating realistic potential solutions to the overall project management. You should also apply some of these techniques to prepare and update your project management plan, using standard systems of time and resource tracking.

As part of the project process, you have been asked to evaluate the relationship between project identification, feasibility, and project planning, with consideration of the impact of project scope on time and resources.

As project management is critical to project success, you are asked to explore different project management strategies and their suitability for this project. Following this analysis, select your preferred strategy to use and justify your choice making reference to your initial project specification.

Compare the outcomes of your initial planned resources, timescales, and costs against actual outcomes.

As your report may be shared with clients, it is critical that appropriate forms of referencing and citation are used throughout.

You are asked to present your final project outcomes to the company board of directors using industry-standard software. The presentation should be around 10 minutes long and recorded.

You will need to reflect on the success of this project and your own performance. This should be done in the form of a written reflection, which should be included in your final report. The reflection should also be part of your project presentation (e.g., the last slide in your PowerPoint presentation). Your reflection should address the following criteria:

What did you aim to achieve through your work?

Did your work succeed in achieving your aims? How do you know?

What aspects of your development process do you think worked well and why? Evaluate all aspects of the project (e.g., initial research, concept development, development process, presentation, etc.) from a range of perspectives.

What problems emerged during the project and how were they tackled? Was there timely identification of issues and resolution during the project process?

What did you learn from undertaking the project?

What are the strengths and weaknesses of your process that you have identified?

How could your process improve for the future?
