Case study

Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) was founded in 2002 by entrepreneur Elon Musk. Musk's vision was to revolutionise the aerospace industry and make space travel affordable and sustainable.

As a private company, SpaceX does not have the same bureaucratic restrictions as NASA. This has enabled Musk to develop rockets with surprising speed. SpaceX is able to create parts and equipment, secure launchpad sites, and hire employees from competing companies and universities much faster than NASA. As a result, NASA is increasingly relying on private companies for services.

SpaceX currently spends around $90million to launch a rocket to the international space station (ISS). This compares favourably to the ~$380 million charged by rivals. The reduced cost is due the strong emphasis that SpaceX have on in-house manufacturing and their focus on the research and development of reusable parts. For example, instead of spending $50,000 to $100,000 to purchase radio equipment and other communications gear, SpaceX was able to develop gear in-house for $5,000. One of the biggest cost savings for SpaceX comes from the reusable rockets that they have developed. SpaceX rockets can be re-used up to 10 times.

After the recent successful rocket launch to the ISS, Elon's vision is nearly a reality. Musk has boldly decided to start taking bookings for a new spacecraft that will enable passengers to accompany astronauts to the ISS. Once the incoming astronauts have landed on the ISS, outgoing astronauts will return on the spacecraft and return the passengers to earth. Musk is expecting to be able to transport up to four passengers per flight. There will be minimum fitness requirements and a maximum passenger and luggage weight. Flights are likely to begin in 2022 but no flights will have fixed dates. At this stage, passengers will have to be ready and waiting for when it is suitable to launch. The system will take payments for the flights and set the conditions out clearly.

As a systems design consultant, you have been asked by Elon Musk to prepare a report with recommendations about the spaceflight booking system proposal.

Your role as a systems analyst requires you to describe the business case, define a clear and measurable scope statement, high level work breakdown structure, describe the process of requirements gathering, develop two user stories, a personaand a storyboard of using the booking system.

Report requirements
1. Introduction

2. Business case ~100 - 200 words(see pages 47-48 of the textbook). In your own words, develop a clear and persuasive business case for the new system.

3. Scope statement ~100 - 200 words (see pages 62-65 of the textbook). In your own words, develop a statement that clearly sets out the scope of this system project.

4. Develop a recommended high-level work breakdown structure of the proposed booking system (see pages 76-88 of the textbook and also LinkedIn learning activity in week 3 SWAY).

5. Preliminary investigation plan ~300 - 400 words(see pages 61-68 of the textbook).Describe how you would run, and the process you would recommend, to develop a preliminary investigationplan to gather requirements for the development of the SpaceXBook booking system.

6. Develop two user stories ~50-100 words(page 369 of the text book, pages 71 and 80 of Chapter 3 Satzinger, Jackson and Burd - Systems analysis and design - link to text book on BB and in Week SWAY )

7. Develop at least one persona ~100 words(see chapter 4 Pratt, A. Nunes, J. Interactive Design : An Introduction to the Theory and Application of User-centered Design - week 7 SWAY)

8. Develop a storyboard (graphical / HCI representation) of the SpaceXBook booking system (see pages 232-245 of Chapter 8 Satzinger, Jackson and Burd - Systems analysis and design - link to text book on BB and in Week 8 SWAY).

9. Appropriately reference your work. Provide at least two references (the text book and additional reading is always a good start).
