In an episode of the Twilight Zone called "I Am the Night-Color Me Black," a town is so consumed by hate and intolerance-racial hatred, religious hatred, political hatred--so thrilled to be about to hang a man, that the sun does not rise and a permanent darkness settles in. In the closing monologue, the narrator says: "A sickness known as hate; not a virus, not a microbe, not a germ - but a sickness nonetheless, highly contagious, deadly in its effects. Don't look for it in the Twilight Zone - look for it in a mirror. Look for it before the light goes out altogether." Of the theories of justice and ethics that we have considered, which offers the best protection against the kind of intolerance that can tear a society apart?
