Hypothetical Scenario
Four children are playing with toys at a table and speaking English and Mandarin.
There is a lot of chattering and laughter.
Another child goes over to join them, and they all go quiet, after a few minutes they start to whisper and speak Mandarin only.
One child then says, "Go away, we don't want to play with you. You look funny."
The educator intervened by asking to play with the children and then telling them she felt left out when they switched to Mandarin, and she did not understand it.
She then mentions how her skin colour looks like that of the child they sent away and that she (the educator) would feel hurt if they refused to play with her.
She then talks to them about different skin colours and asks if they are okay to invite the other child back to play. They do.
based on this senario Should educators draw attention to such differences if they have not heard any race-based conversations come up or will this create unnecessary tensions?
If so why?
