Describe a change, big or small, that you feel should be implemented in your current or a prior workplace.
One of the most important things in a workplace is safety. Especially in a hospital where patients lives are on the line, it is vital that we keep them safe and give them the best care we can. One of the ways that we can do this is by making sure the nurses and NAs have an appropriate amount of patients. Nursing shortage is a very big problem and I feel as though many units bite off more than they can chew. This is a very difficult balance because we do not have enough employees, but we also have too many people that need beds in the hospital. I think a good way to go about doing this is to fast-track patients if it is safe for them. Getting social work involved more often than we do is also important because they may be able to find placement for patients going to rehabilitation centers, group homes, or nursing homes. A lot of times we have patients that stay on the unit 2 or 3 extra days simply because they are unable to find placement.
- If you were the unit manager, describe the steps you would take to facilitate this change according to Lewin.
Lewin used an interesting model that I had never heard of before. It begins with "unfreezing" which is a way of changing a known pattern (Realizeit, 2021). This can be very challenging because people are often stuck in their old habits. In order to change the pattern, I would not only have to talk with the employees on our floor but also the staff that help to admit patients. I would explain to them that it is unsafe for patients and staff. The "unfreezing" technique gives employees from all units to create an environment that is right for change. As a manager, I would utilize this time to ask for the opinions of others to make sure that they have a voice in the matter. The second step is "moving", in which the staff becomes even more involved and the changes are implemented. Changes may include higher more staff, being selective about what patients go to what units, and trying to discharge patients as soon as possible. Once the changes have been implemented we move into the "refreezing" stage where changes are made permanent.
- Hypothesize the potential facilitators and barriers associated with a Force Field Analysis of this change, and how you would utilize this information
Force Field Analysis is the idea that some people will resist change while others will welcome change (The Mind Tools Content Team By the Mind Tools Content Team et al.). With this information, it is important to know that not everyone will be happy about the decision to change. Listening to their opinions and make sure that their voices are also heard.
Answer this prompts: basing on the statement above:
- Give feedback regarding other factors in Lewin's three steps that should be considered when contemplating this change.
- Comment on the impact of the described facilitators and barriers, and your opinion regarding the success of this change, according to Lewin.
