Smilin is a (hypothetical) protein that causes people to be happy. It is inactive in many chronically unhappy people. The mRNA isolated from a number of different unhappy persons in the same family was found to lack an internal stretch of 173-nucleotides that are present in the Smilin mRNA isolated from a control group of generally happy people. The DNA sequences of the Smilin genes from the happy and unhappy persons were determined and compared. They differed by just one nucleotide change---and no nucleotides were deleted. Moreover, the change was found in an intron. Can you hypothesize a molecular mechanism by which a single nucleotide change in a gene could cause the observed internal deletion in the mRNA? Be sure to include a comparison of the mechanism that is involved between what happens in the normal and mutant transcript. What consequences for the Smilin protein would result from removing a 173-nucleotide-long internal stretch from the coding region of the Smiling mRNA?
The effective population sizes were recorded for population over five generations; 100, 120, 17, 40, 88. Estimate the harmonic mean of effective population size for this population?
Consider about what was discussed in the reading project in terms of media components and environmental factors, and develop hypotheses about.
Explain how sexual reproduction in plants illustrates alternation of generations. Include the processes involved and include at least one type of plant to illustrate your answer.
There is a hybridization event between two different species with the same chromosome number. The hybrids are sterile. Explain your answer.
Explain a specific example of a cross in two parents, each homozygous for different traits, which would result in a phenotype that is distinct from either parental phenotype.
The component of immune system which protects against pathogens without requiring prior sensitization is referred to as.

White fruit color in summer squash is dependent on dominant allele W and colored fruit on recessive allele w. In the presence of ww and a dominant gene G, the color of the fruit is yellow.
In interrupted mating experiments using an Hfr strain in E. coli, you find that two genes, bio and arg, are transferred at about the same time. A third gene, pab is transferred slightly later.
You find out an unusual organism growing in the bark of a dying tree. Under a microscope, you observe that its cells are eukaryotic, have cell walls, and do not contain chloroplasts. Into what kingdom would you categorize this organism? Explain the d..
In Drosophila a cross was made between a yellow-bodied male with vestigial (not fully developed) wings and a wild-type female (brown body). The F1 generation consisted of wild-type males and wild-type females.
