Question

A student researcher believes that left-handed people are more clumsy. Clumsiness would mean that certain occupations that require a great deal of co-ordination would be difficult or impossible for left-handers to carry out. To conduct her research, she contacted 25 professional race car drivers. The cars these drivers race have a manual transmission with a gear shift on the floor to the right of the steering wheel. She asked each of the drivers to report their preferred hand for writing and throwing a ball.

Aware of the necessity of having a control group, she also contacted 25 librarians and asked the same two questions.

She discovered that there were no left-handers in her sample of professional drivers while there were 3 left-handed librarians. She concluded that her hypothesis was correct and left-handers are more clumsy.
