Come up with an idea for a basic scientific study on any topic you would like. You DO NOT need to do a study in any way, nor does it need to be doable by you. This is purely a thought experiment. Describe this study, including the observations (research) that led you to the idea, by following the steps of the scientific method, including what results would support or disprove your hypothesis if the study was completed.
- What observations have you or others made that made you interested in this subject?
- What question are you trying to answer?
- A hypothesis is a statement (not a question) that describes what is expected to happen. Write a hypothesis for this study. (try the format "_____ will cause ______" or something similar).
- What will you manipulate (try to change) to test this hypothesis? What comparisons will you make? What will you measure?
- What will you control (keep the same or hold steady) while testing this hypothesis?
- What results might support your hypothesis. You'll notice I did not use the word "prove" because we cannot prove things, only show support for them. We can disprove things, but not the other way around.
- What would you do if the hypothesis was supported? What would you do if it wasn't?
- How can you make this information useful to others?
