Question

A 78-year-old male is recovering on a right hip replacement 4 days ago. The client has a history of right hip fracture, hyperthyroidism, and bilateral cataracts. He is retired, unmarried, and lives alone. His daughter lives 4 hours from the hospital. She typically calls daily for updates. At 7:00 a.m. (0720), the patient wakes up and eats his breakfast as normal. The daughter calls her father at 0800 to check on her father. He answers the phone and notices that his speech is slurred. The daughter asks him if he is okay, and when he attempts to answer her question, it doesn't make sense. The patient's daughter calls 911. Upon EMS arrival they note his slurred speech, left facial droop, left arm drift, and left leg weakness.
