HUMS 1051 Indigenous Australians: Culture and Colonisation - University of South Australia
You will be allocated with the name of a prominent Indigenous Australian leader and will be required to research this individual and their community, and present a profile of the person and their work throughout Australia.
The following Instructions summarise the submission requirements for this assessment:
1) Written Summary - 2000 words
The Written Summary report is to be submitted by one group member by the due date - online. It should provide key points from your research, analysis and references used. Please be advised that you are required to use the Harvard referencing style for this assessment. The written component will be returned to you with the feedback sheet online. Note: Only one summary report per group is required to be submitted.
2) Record of Group Participation
Assessment 3 will result in a group grade therefore, attached to the written summary you will submit a Record of Group Participation. A recording proforma has been provided to you in order to account for group meetings, plans made, and other forms of communication. This proforma is a guide only: you can submit other records of your groups' activity should it be relevant to understanding your groups' processes. At the end of the ‘Record' you will see a ‘Summary' section. These should be written individually. Do not forget to write a comprehensive summary of your group processes, challenges or effective teamwork. This will require honest analysis.. * The Record of Group Participation is separate to the word count of the Written Summary report.
What learning can you apply from the course, to the reality for the profile person?
For example:
• When and where were they born?
Link the person to the time and place in Australia and the laws and policies that related to the control of Aboriginal Australian people.
• What era in Australian history did they and/or their family grow up in?
Consider the environment in Australia for Aboriginal Australian people at that time. What might it have been like? What were they likely to have experienced? What was happening generally in Australia at that time? Go as far forward and backward in time as you can.
• What community/nation/state is the person from?Is this known? If not why not?
• What has been recognised as achievements and struggles for the profile person and their family and community?
• How is this person remembered or acknowledged today? The David Unaipon story presented in Week 1 Lecture may give you some ideas.
• How does this person's life story relate to your knowledge of Cultural Competency? This needs to be demonstrated throughout by all group members.
• How can you use your reflections throughout the topic to demonstrate your cultural competency? Have you considered the roles of racism/power and privilege/psychology as a discipline and the consequences/intergenerational trauma/history/culture/identity/transmission of knowledge/language and meaning/decolonisation/self-awareness/policies and practices/the Stolen Generations/The Dreaming? These are just some of the contexts that must be included for passing this well.
