Read the Science article entitled, "Humans have more primitive hands than chimpanzees" found here. Next provide a brief summary of the article and discuss whether or not you think humans have more primitive or advanced hands than chimpanzees. Justify your response.
After reading the article, I realized just how close we humans are to chimpanzees and even apes. In regards to the makeup of humans hands and chimpanzees, we are not much different. However, humans hands, over time, began to change. Tool making was the primary source of living in those times, such as utilizing stones or making knives. Humans have primitive hands, whereas, chimpanzees have hands specialized for tree climbing and swinging. Human hands evolved. Human hands can grasp objects easier. I believe Almecija's theory on the evolution of hands is dead on. He theorized that in our human line, our ancestors made it possible for gathering a wide variety of foods, not just better toolmakers. Furthermore, he theorized that the human hands largely retained the primitive state but the most important changes led to toolmaking would have been neurological. That is, the result of enlargement and evolution of the human brain and its ability to plan ahead and better coordinate hand movements. I do think humans hands are more advanced then chimpanzees only because we were designed to make things of this world. On the other hand, chimpanzees only true nature is to utilize their hands for grasping trees.
