You have recently joined to lead a team of 50 employees. You have 5 direct reports and the remaining 45 team members report to your 5 direct reports. You have been informed that there have been multiple issues regarding performance management for the team. You decide to speak to team members and give below is what you hear from them (Please refer What you heard from the team). For each of these situations (Please refer What you heard from the team) please answer what do you think are the possible problem/s and solution/s. What actions will you take and why? What will you include in these actions? Please make relevant and necessary assumptions (and state your assumptions) as you answer this question. Please make reference to relevant Human Resource Management concepts.

What you heard from the team

  • "I have no idea about what is expected from me. I just get some random assignments."
  • "Performance appraisal here is just a farce. It's not your performance but your relationship with your supervisors that matters"
  • "Initially when I joined from another company I worked with great commitment and performance all though the year. I ended up with an average rating. I saw that quite a few did some big bang events (I would call it self-promotion) closer to the year-end appraisal and they were rewarded as high performers. What's the use of year-long commitment and performance?"
  • "I was among the top performers based on quantitative targets during the year. Yet I did not get an exceptional rating. I was informed that I did not demonstrate "teamwork" which is essential to our culture. When I asked for more details, I only received vague responses"
