Strategic human resource management and performance eBay

In 2015, multi-national internet auction firm eBay spun off its PayPal subsidiary and decided to review the way it manages its organizational culture. The CEO changed his title to 'Chief Culture Officer' in recognition of his personal commitment to driving cultural change. A new corporate purpose was introduced, along with five new values including 'people are basically good' and 'treat others as you want to be treated'. These values underpinned the new culture. 

The decision was made to monitor the uptake of the values among employees by measuring them. eBay's data scientists and organization development experts regularly survey employees on over 50 cultural attributes mapped to the values and track levels of engagement. These data are combined with operational metrics to evaluate how cultural compliance impacts on business performance. 

Analysts also conduct analysis on news articles and content on Glassdoor to gain more accurate insight into how people inside and outside the company view it.
