Question

Human bias impacts all decision-making. In this case, the nurse mentally anchored on "over-reacting" parents. This mental anchor mis-directed the necessary critical thinking needed to complete this triage. This bias and misperception led to a poor and potentially fatal triage decision. In this type of scenario, the triage nurse must recognize which of the following as the most important factor in quality outcomes for the patient? Unacceptable behaviors by family or caregivers are just part of the job. Parents of pediatric patients always tend to over-react and need to be supported. The patient should always be the focus, especially in pediatric patients. When communication between the triage nurse and parents is effective and appropriate, the patient will always benefit.
