HSH745 - Health Program Evaluation Assignment - Evaluation Plan, Deakin University, Australia

Brief Description of Task - Design an evaluation plan (impact or process) of a currently running program (2000 words).

Instructions for this task -

You will be provided with two options (just choose one) of current programs that need to be evaluated. You need to design an evaluation plan for these programs. The information you are provided with is there to give you a program to evaluate, you can't change any of the information that is provided, but you can extrapolate to make things a little easier.

Your evaluation plan is to be EITHER an impact OR a process evaluation (don't try and do both).

Most programs have multiple objectives, target groups and strategies. For the purpose of this assessment, you can choose to focus on one or more of these (instead of the whole program).

You are welcome to use a template for this task (see below), or you can write it as a report.

A few things you might like to include:

Description of the health promotion program being evaluated

• Goals and objectives of the program
• Program strategies - If your program has strategies, only focus on one or two of them.

Literature Review

• You need to include a small literature review that surrounds the program (or the issue that is seeking to be solved by the program) that you are writing an evaluation plan for.
• You only need to focus on the strategies/objectives that you have chosen for your evaluation - don't do a literature review on the whole program or health issue.
• The literature that you address here will allow you to discuss it later on.
• This section should include some discussion of the need for the evaluation of the program.
• You can write up this section however you like.

Evaluation strategy (including methods)

Evaluation questions OR hypotheses OR Objectives

You need to set out the questions, hypotheses or objectives that you want to test. use this section to answer what you trying to achieve in your evaluation?

Description of the evaluation design. You need to state here what type of design you will be using. You may want to look at the literature you have collected and see what type of designs they have used and let them inform what you are doing (remember to keep referencing ideas that are not your own).

Rationale for the evaluation design, you need to then explain why you have selected this evaluation design.

Here you should include a brief discussion on the different approaches that you could employ and their relative strengths and weaknesses. You will need to use evidence to support this.

You also need to provide detail of data collection and very basic analysis methods of your evaluation.

This section should answer questions like (this is not an exhaustive list!):

• Who am I collecting data from?
• How many?
• How will I collect the data?
• When will I collect the data?
• If you are conducting interviews or survey, you don't need to design the interview format or survey. BUT, you do need to provide a couple of themes/questions that you might cover.

Time-line for all components of the evaluation strategy

• You need to include an evaluation time line
• You can do this whichever way you like, a gantt chart is a simple way to do this.
• Make sure you include everything that you think you need to do right from setting up the evaluation, to implementing it right down to data analysis and report writing.

References - If you don't have adequate references you will fail to provide enough detailed discussion, and therefore will score poorly, make sure you do a good search of the literature.
