HR Planning Forecasting Exercise
The Bank of Toronto
As an HR planner, you are required to forecast the human resource needs of the Bank of Toronto which currently employs 1,100 people. The bank has 50 branch offices located throughout Toronto. Each branch employs 14 persons (4 supervisors and 10 tellers). The bank is planning on installing 30 automated teller machines in the branches. The machines are scheduled to be in operation by the end of the current year. For each ATM, one less teller will be needed.
You need to assume the following:
1. You are making forecasts for each of three years.
2. Each branch employs 4 supervisors and 10 tellers. There are also 400 employees who work in the main office of the bank.
3. In the first year, 30 new ATMs will be put in operation and they will replace 30 tellers.
4. Annual turnover is 30 percent for tellers, 20 percent for supervisors, and 10 percent in the main office.
Current Staff
Supervisors = 200 (4 per branch x 50 branches); turnover rate is 20 percent.
Tellers = 500 (10 per branch x 50 branches); turnover rate is 30 percent.
Main office = 400 employees; turnover rate is 10 percent.
Questions:
1. Based on the information given above, determine employee turnover for the main office and the branches each year for each job category (main office employees, tellers, supervisors). In other words, indicate the turnover in each of the three years for employees in the main office, as well as the branch tellers and supervisors.
2. Determine the net HR requirement in each job category for each of the next three years and if there will an HR shortage or surplus. Be sure to indicate the net HR requirement for employees in the main office, tellers, and supervisors in each of the three years.
3. What actions are required each year in each job category given the net HR requirement? How many employees in each job category will be working for the bank at the end of each of the next three years as a result of these actions?
4. What are some of the assumptions being made in this exercise that can affect the calculations and what other factors might also influence the calculations that have not been considered?
