Requirements
For your first Assessment Task you are required to create a 10 min narrated presentation.
Whilst there is a wide range of presentation software available, we require you to create your presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint (you MUST NOT use other presentation tools e.g., Prezi, SlideRocket etc)
What is the advantage of using Microsoft PowerPoint?
Read the Case of Mr. T
Start by reading The Case of Mr. T provided on CloudDeakin in the Resources folder ‘Assessment Task 1: Narrated Presentation'. The information provided about Mr. T is based on a real case. However, all identifying information has been altered to protect the identity of the individuals and organisations involved. Based on the content provided to you in weeks 1-4 please address the following:
1) Provide a brief summary of Mr. T's offending and relevant background information. In this section, you need to introduce Mr. T to the prison staff, provide information about Mr. T's charges and background. Use your own words and ensure your description is succinct. This section should be no longer than 2-2.5min in length.
2) Identify the ethical issues that the prison staff should consider and/or address when supervising Mr. T. Start this section by explaining why it is important to observe ethical guidelines. Then, identify a minimum of 5 ethical issues and explain how they apply/are relevant to Mr. T's case. Draw on the content covered in Week 2 lectures and seminars. This section should be approx. 2 min in length.
3) Identify possible strategies that the prison staff could use to build engagement with Mr.T. Explain how and why these strategies might assist with building engagement. Draw on the content covered in Week 3 lectures and seminars. This section should be approx. 2 min in length.
4) Outline your assessment of Mr. T's current dangerousness (i.e., his current risk of committing sexual and physical violence in the Centre) and why you hold this view. In this section, you need demonstrate how you arrive at this risk assessment and which tools and theoretical frameworks you utilised in this process. Draw on content from the Week 4 lectures and seminar. This section should be approx. 2-3 min in length.
5) Identify, define, and describe issues of risk for the prison staff when dealing with Mr. T in terms of their own wellbeing in the workplace. When discussing these risks, you may have to explain what these risks are and how they are relevant in this case. Draw on Week 4 lectures and seminar content. This section should be approx. 1-1.5 min. in length.
Create your own presentation
1. Creating your slides
When designing your slides, think about the things that you have found most useful in the presentations you have seen as part of your study. Consider the following points:
• Is it better to include a lot of text or just the central points?
• Is there enough contrast between the text and background colour?
• Is the text large enough to read easily?
• Does the presentation have a logical order?
• Does the presentation look professional?
2. Think about your narration
When preparing your presentation, think about your audience: the prison staff. Consider the following information:
• Is my narration clear, well-paced, and easy to understand?
• Is my narration congruent with the content presented on the slides?
• Am I using psychological jargon unnecessarily?
• Do I explain specific terms and theoretical frameworks with sufficient ease and clarity for the audience to understand?
3. Add your audio recording
Once you have created your slides and saved your work as a .pptx file, you need to add your narration as an audio recording on each slide. Within Powerpoint (PC or Mac), follow these steps:
1. Select Insert > Audio.
2. Select Record Audio.
3. Type in a name for your audio file, select Record (the red button), then speak.
Important: Your device must have a microphone enabled in order to record audio.
4. To review your recording, select Stop (Blue square) and then select Play (green triangle).
5. Select Record to re-record your clip, or select OK if you're satisfied. This will create a recording icon.
6. To move your clip, select and drag the audio icon to where you want it on the slide.
