Assignment:

For the following scenarios, explain all of the steps involved from the point of initial contact with the police, to arrest and detention by law enforcement. In your explanation we should see how youth crime is treated differently from adult crime, the application of EJM's, an understanding of EJM and your rationale in the application of these measures. Do not forget to justify or validate your answers.

Scenario 1: BJ and SM are both 16 years old. It is Saturday night and BJ has "scored" some alcohol. The two are drinking in the park when SM pulls out a can of spray paint. The two decide to spray graffiti on the wall of a nearby senior's center. They spray vulgarities and crude images on the wall. After vandalizing the wall, the duo decide to go to a construction site where they break six windows of the townhouses that are under construction. A neighbor hears the breaking glass and calls 911. The police arrive and catch them in the act.

Scenario 2: Three friends are out late on a Friday night. They are bored and decide to go down to an industrial part of town so they could cause mischief. They are in an area with several factories when TS notices that a window inone of the factories is broken. He suggests that they explore. Once inside the factory, DD locates the breakroom where there are several vending machines. They decide to break into the vending machines for the cash and candies. After taking as much cash and snack items as they can, they leave. JW drops his school id on the way out. On Monday morning, the factory manager calls the police who come to investigate the break in. The police find the id and eventually tack down JW at his school. (do not forget the possibilities presented to JW in order to lessen his punishment)

Scenario 3: LE and DC both attend the same high school. DC is known to police. LE thinks that DC is cool and so when DC invited LE to smoke a joint on Saturday evening, LE accepts. When the two reach the park they see another person from their school. DC suggests that they rob the classmate. LE is reluctant but eventually agrees to help. They violently rob the boy leaving him with many injuries. The victim tells the police who did the attack and the police arrest the boys. When explaining your overview, think about the video on Youth Court and Sentencing. Also, will you treat the two boys the same or individually and why?
