The impact of resource management on student performance

Presume you are an administrator in an elementary school district that is having financial difficulty. Your superintendent has provided you with a list of potential reductions for the next school year. He has asked for your input as to which reductions to implement and why.

The community has traditionally asked that the school district attempt to "live within its means". You are told that the deficit that needs to be trimmed from the budget is $1,000,000. You are, in a businesslike fashion, to recommend budget line item reductions. Refer to the Case Study in Chapter 2, pages 43- 45 for background information and the list of potential reductions. Provide an overall rationale and recommendation for your approach. In addition, prepare a 6 to 10 page paper, which includes a minimum of two to three paragraph (approximately one-half page) response to address each of the following questions.

1. Vision: Describe how your financial recommendations relate to the organizational vision, have the potential to involve the community in collaboration, and promote safe and efficient facilities.

2. Student Performance: Describe how your financial recommendations will affect the effectiveness of the instructional program provided to students.

3. Management of the Organization: Describe how your financial recommendations will affect the administration and supervision of students.

4. Collaboration with Families and Community: Prepare a statement to the community that describes the Budget as meeting the community desire that the school "live within its means" while you solicit their input, involvement, and collaboration. Identify potential school, business, community, and social agency partnerships.

5. Student Diversity: State how you addressed student diversity in preparing the budget including special education and other disaggregated groups.

6. Influence the Larger Context: Prepare a statement for your state legislator advocating for equitable funding for all students regardless of their socioeconomic background.
