Assignment:

You work in a nightclub bar, where IDs are always checked by security staff before patrons enter the club. As you tend to the busy bar, a group of young people approaches, loudly shouting out their drink orders. Among them, two of the girls appear to be under the age of 25.

1. What you would do and say in this situation? Speak directly to the patrons and request the required proof of age evidence,

2. Make sure you explain clearly, what details you would check on the evidence and how you would verify that the ID provided is authentic,

3. Upon inspection, it turns out all the patrons are legally permitted to consume alcohol and you are permitted to serve them.

Observation checklist:

  • Remained calm and professional throughout the interaction.
  • Politely ask the patrons for everyone's ID and explain that providing valid ID is a legal requirement for verifying their age to ensure they are of legal drinking age, to avoid embarrassing the young girls.
  • Ensured the IDs were current and recognized forms of identification - a passport, driver/rider license, a NSW Photo Card, Proof of Age Card issued by the Commonwealth and another State or Territory
  • Verify identification by examining IDs closely, e.g., security features like holograms, and watermarks, to ensure they are not altered.
  • Checked date of birth and that they are 18+, compared photo with the individual, and ensured ID is not expired.
  • Ensure you verbally explain what details you look for to verify authenticity (this includes details of the patron, security features, and ensuring it is not a fake document).
