The fire and emergency services administrator (FSA) must deal with and overcome challenges as the industry changes and modernizes in the twenty-first century. Choose one challenge and research how the FSA of today and tomorrow can use the concepts of strategic, operational, and master planning; project and plan management; resource management and allocation; and so forth to keep his or her department moving in the right direction. Discuss how you would present your conclusions to fire professionals and to the public. Come up with a presentation plan, including both written and verbal tactics.

The final examination will be administered through the classroom during the last week of the term, and will be essay questions focused on the course outcomes. Your essay question responses will be evaluated based on content, development, organization, and presentation and grammar.

1. Planning is a critical skill for Fire and Emergency Services Administrators and there are many planning tools available to help them perform this task. Explain how history and tradition have influenced the planning process and at least four elements in any planning tool.
2. One of the responsibilities of the Fire and Emergency Services Administrator is to create a team environment to enhance departmental operations. Define team and describe the four essential ingredients required for a successful team.
3. Your fire department has reduced staffing and closed one of five stations due to budget constraints. Develop a press release to announce this decision, and prepare three potential responses to anticipated questions from the press.
4. The NFPA 1500 standard provides a model for Occupational Safety and Health for the fire and emergency services. Explain how these safety standards influence administration and operations by developing a departmental implementation plan.
5. A successful Fire and Emergency Services Administrator must take a community approach to define, promote, and gain acceptance for a stronger and more effective department that will achieve an acceptable level of risk in the community. Describe the four core concepts including examples that must be considered when taking this approach.
