Essay Reflect on your learning in this unit, with specific reference to your reading and to the discussions in class, in relation to how you will practise social work in a multi-cultural, cosmopolitan world of crisis and change.
How will your own cultural and epistemological traditions be reflected in your practice, and how will you open yourself up to other world views? In writing this assignment you should use the first person if you wish (e.g. "I think . . .", "My experience of . . .") etc.
You will be assessed on how well you are able to use your reading and class discussions to demonstrate your learning from the unit, especially in terms of how you will practise in multicultural Australia, and in the context of a future of crisis and change. You will also be assessed on your capacity for self-reflection and analysis in terms of your own cultural and epistemological background
• Think about your studies in your previous degree, in terms of the three paradigms outlined in Lecture 2. Was one of these paradigms preferred over the other two?
• Watch Lectures 3 and 4.
• Watch Video: ‘The Relationship Between Theory and Practice in Social Work'
• (from Library holdings). Think about the following and make notes ready to discuss in tutorials
o How does this video construct ‘social work'?
o What are its assumptions about what is good social work theory?
o What does it leave out?
• Read Chapter 1 of Payne & Reith-Hall (eds): The Routledge Handbook of Social Work Theory (available on-line from the Library). This brings out the complexity of "Social Work Theory". We will explore that complexity in the tutorials. Come to the tutorial with your questions. Other chapters in this book will be useful for this unit and for the first assignment.
