PETALING JAYA: The number of those vaccinated in Malaysia has passed the 1.3 million marks.
According to figures put out by the Special Committee on Covid-19 Vaccine Supply on the vaksincovid.my Twitter account, 1,278,981 have received their first dose while 793,463 had both doses.
This is slightly less than 10% of the population that has to be vaccinated in order to achieve herd immunity.
Malaysia is aiming to achieve herd immunity by inoculating 80% of its population, or 26.7 million people.
Selangor has the greatest number of vaccine doses administered by state - a total of 168,492 people has received the first dose while 108,981 have received both doses.
Labuan has the lowest number of vaccine doses administered with only a total of 13,649 people getting their vaccine, out of whom 6,897 have received both doses.
On Wednesday, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the country's vaccination programme was already being ramped up and could be completed before the end of the year.
The rollout rate is currently facing a slow supply of vaccines.
"(The rate of vaccination) will increase in June, July, August and with the rate we are projecting, I am confident that we can finish this year," he said at a virtual press conference.
Khairy said that on Tuesday alone, 76,000 people were vaccinated, which was well above the average of 30,000 to 40,000 inoculations predicted earlier.
In early May, Khairy had warned that Phase Three of the immunisation programme, which is supposed to start this month, could be delayed if vaccine supplies did not arrive on time.
He earlier said the third phase of the immunisation programme was expected to run from May 2021 until February 2022.
Malaysia is expecting some 1.1 million doses of AstraZeneca this month via Covax. The AstraZeneca vaccine is via an opt-in, separate from the programme.
