Planning a workplace coaching session
Scenario 1: Coaching poor performance
Coaching in an emotionally charged context
In this activityyou will be placed into a situation whereby a line manager has to plan and conduct a coaching session. This will bring together two learning streams: Using a template to plan a coaching session, and assisting managers where they are going to be conducting coaching in the workplace and with employees that may have difficult or very emotional responses to the topic of the session.
Instructions
This can be done alone or in a small group
• Use the relevant Tools provided to prepare for the session. You may also choose to use the coaching session plan template provided or an alternate you source. (35 minutes)
• Reality check your plan (10 minutes)
• Be sensitive to the fact the session will most likely be highly emotional. You must address this in your planning.
Bruce may have felt pleased to be appointed supervisor but now he really had second thoughts about taking on the job. Stepping into the supervisor's job for the first time was not easy.
Question 1. Acting as the Mine Manager,plan an appropriate coaching session of no more than 2 hours. Be sure to establish how the competing demands above can be dealt with and how best you can skill Bruce to better assume his new responsibilities and complete his higher level tasks.
