This is going to be a bit different. Many of the hot buttons the class listed are exhibited in the video clip of this assignment. I want you to imagine you are one of the teachers at the preschool shown in this episode of "Supernanny." I am in no way endorsing the show or the host's methods or ay of that- I simply chose this video because of the situation (mom and dad bought a preschool and allow their boys to be there though the boys express many challenging behaviors which impedes on their own and other children's learning, safety, and the teachers' jobs since they are responsible for all of the children and the boys' parents are the teachers' employers.
For this Midterm Check for Understanding, watch the video and record an observation (objective- only what you see and hear and nothing about what you think is going on). You can leave out the outtakes and just observe when they film the preschool setting. You will submit here:
A. The observation
B. At least two challenging behaviors you observed that are most closely related to hot button behaviors for you.
C. How you, if you were one of the teachers, might approach those challenging behaviors using course content-specific methods or insights.
D. Reframing of the two+ behaviors you chose from the observation. List the behavior(s), tell what the behavior looks like, describe another perspective of the behavior (what might the child be communicating? What might they need or what may be root causes for the behavior?), and explain a teacher's role if she/he witnesses the behaviors.
For example of #4 (not from the video):
1. List: Child bit girl to get the ball.
2. Tell: The child was being aggressive and violent, not using her words.
3. Describe: The child was very frustrated and could not come up with another way to communicate that she wanted the ball or was feeling ignored by the child with the ball.
4. Explain: As a teacher, my role is to respond, keep everyone safe, tend to any hurt children, guide better behavior techniques, redirect when possible, and be present to facilitate the child practicing what I explained as well as being present to intervene and notice the potential for the behavior to happen again and be able to stop it before it happens.
