Assignment:

Can you think about the ways that you perform a gendered script. This could be what you do on a daily basis or what you do on special occasions. Can you pick five things that're apart of your performance of gender.

For each of those five things, do the following:

Describe the performance and how you do it "properly."
Discuss where/how you learned that aspect of your gender performance.
Describe the consequences (if any) for you if you fail to do the performance properly.
Using a conflict perspective, discuss who benefits from this gendered script.

For instance, I might talk about the gendered scripts that I used for my children when they were babies. As the primary caretaker, I dressed them in pink and purple clothes, or in clothes that had flowers, bows, and/or ruffles on them. I knew that this was the way that girls were "supposed" to dress because girl and boy baby clothes are presented separately in most major stores and are frequently clearly labelled as such. When I did dress my baby children in blues and greens instead, strangers felt free to ask persistent questions about whether they were boys or girls. Sometimes they would make disapproving comments about my skills as a mother and what I should be doing differently. Beneficiaries of this gendered script include companies that can then sell more clothing that they would otherwise do if all babies wore the same types of clothes.
