Discussion Post: Antibiotics
Part 1
Read the papers assigned for this week, "Molecular mechanisms of antibiotic resistance" and "Adaptive and mutational resistance: role of porins and efflux pumps in drug resistance". These articles describe several different types of resistance mechanisms, use these as a framework to prepare your DQ post. Create your initial post on the DQ 4 Discussion Board in response to the following: Select a SINGLE specific example of antibiotic resistance from the papers above. Describe this example of antibiotic resistance SPECIFICALLY in molecular detail (you will likely have to look up some of the articles referenced in the assigned review papers to get this information). You post should be succinct and include the following information:
• "General type" of resistance mechanism and how the resistance works in general terms (i.e. "efflux pump upregulation" that results in more efflux pumps in the bacteria and the antibiotic gets pumped out of the cell decreasing its efficacy)
• Specific details of resistance (include: bacteria species, antibiotic(s) effected, protein(s) involved, you can likely get this information from papers referenced in the assigned review articles, please write out all references you use in your post)
• How would you "fix" the antibiotic to overcome antibiotic resistance? (I want this to be YOUR ideas not necessarily something that has been done. Think about the problem, what chemical and biochemical processes must occur to enable the bacteria to be resistant and how you might prevent these processes from occurring. BE SPECIFIC.)
Part 2
Select ONE of the "barriers" described in Table 1 of the manuscript above and describe a SPECIFIC example of this "barrier" from the primary literature. You may pull your example of this "barrier" in action from either scientific journals or from a news article. Provide the full reference to the article you use. Summarize your example by posting the following:
• "Specific barrier" you selected for your example, from Table 1
• Summary (3-5 sentences) describing how this barrier is exemplified in the article you found. Include the full citation for your article here.
• How would you "fix" this barrier with reference to the specific example you cited? Be creative, some barriers are scientific and require scientific solutions, some are cultural or societal and dont have scientific solutions, some are institutional and require their own unique solutions.
