Instructions
For this assignment, you will be examining media that you have encountered and analyzing your experiences.
You will be writing a 750-word essay with an introduction, thesis/purpose statement, and conclusion.
Task: Choose two pieces of media that tell a story. These media can be movies, series (TV shows, streaming series) novels, comic books, videogames, shows, or YouTube or other streaming visual, storytelling media.
For one, pick a piece of media (as described above) that you have watched/read that included a stereotype of someone who shares cultural traits with you that you found personally hurtful or offensive.
For the other, pick a piece of media that you have watched/read that included a depiction of someone like you that you felt accurately represented someone who shares cultural traits with you.
1. For each, provide a quick overview of the plot and a description of the character(s) that are either stereotypical or representative.
2. Further, discuss whether you felt that the author/director/creator intended this character to be stereotypical or representative and who you think the intended audience of the piece of media is. Also answer the question, in some detail, if knowing the author's intention and the intended audience makes the depiction better or worse or more healing or less healing?
3. Then, discuss how each of your two examples made you feel when viewing them for the first time and what specific details you found the most harmful (in the stereotyping example) or the most exciting to see (for the representative example).
4. Write a paragraph exploring how you can use your knowledge of stereotypes and representative media depictions to help you communicate to others about the harmful stereotypes about your culture and the positive representations.
