Essay
You must have handed in an annotated bibliography and a proposal and have had both graded with comments before you can hand in your essay.( done) Based on the research you began in your Annotated Bibliography, and the working thesis and plan of argument you developed in your Proposal, you will take a clear and specific, argumentative position on your topic that will allow you to critically analyze your topic. In other words, you will need to make a critically astute and provocative claim (i.e. you need to have a thesis statement) and argue your case with evidence and reasoned analysis. Your thesis statement should be a revised version of your proposal thesis; revised in part based on instructor comments. Avoid overly prescriptive thesis statements. Bury any "shoulds," "musts," or "needs to" prescriptions in an analytic argument that addresses consequences.
You will argue your point of view and analyze your topic using evidence from course readings and researched sources. In other words, this is a thesis essay with a significant research component that will require a bibliography of at least four academic sources (but preferably more) and one credible non-academic source. You can use course readings as sources but no more than two and at least one. At least two (preferably more) of your academic sources must be researched outside the course readings. See annotated bibliography instructions for more details.
Psychology/ Psychiatry/Medical sources can be used for context but no more than two and your focus and approach must remain sociological. It would be best if most of your sources are the same as those from your Annotated Bibliography; however, as this project progresses from bibliography to proposal to essay, adjustments and changes are to be expected, thus some of your sources can change. You must cite each referenced source at least once (if not more) in your paper. Direct quotes are acceptable but avoid long quotes and too many quotes. Paraphrase instead.
How you analyze your topic will depend on your research and approach, but regardless of topic your analysis will need to consider your topic in relation to society.
If analyzing any form of media as a major component of your essay, your thesis statement should have something to say about it and it will need to be properly referenced. Please begin your thesis statement with the phrase: "In this essay I will argue that..." Do not italicize or bold your thesis. Do not begin your paper with your thesis.
You have to introduce your topic and set up your thesis before you state your thesis. Do not forget to include a brief plan of argument after your thesis in your introduction.
You should organize the body of your essay using descriptive subheadings.
1. Clarity, quality, and depth of introduction and thesis statement
2. Clarity, quality, and depth of overall argument
3. Quality and implementation of research
4. Structure and organization
5. Spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure
6. Following assignment and formatting instructions
