Discussion Post I: Expressing the Pro and Con of an Issue

To give you some perspective on writing pro/con as part of assignments, we will write about the pro and con of using a product. When you write about the "pro" of a product, you focus on one reason that supports that product. When you write about the "con" of a product, you focus on one reason that goes against that product.

Initial Post

You should select a fun product that is interesting to you. You can write one paragraph about the "pro" of using the product and one paragraph about the "con" of the product. You can pick your own product, but here are some suggestions:

1. Water bottle
2. Self-driving cars
3. Jelly beans
4. Video games
5. Ebooks

Discussion Post II: Fact vs. Opinion

In this unit, we have looked at the differences between facts and opinions. You will need to use both in your writing, but they serve very different purposes.

Initial Post:

In your initial post, consider the following questions:

1. What would you consider to be the biggest difference between a fact and an opinion? How would you use a fact in your writing and how would you use opinion in your writing?

2. Why do you think that people get confused about the difference between a fact and an opinion?

Provide two statements at the end of your post. You can call them Statement # 1 and Statement # 2. One statement should be a fact and one should be an opinion. Do not state which is the fact and which is the opinion.

Discussion Post III: Rhetorical Appeals Analysis

In this discussion, you will analyze a subject for its use of the rhetorical appeals.

Initial Post:

Begin by selecting an advertisement for a popular product, such as soda, food, clothing brand, or a car. Write one paragraph considering the advertisement rhetorically by answering these questions: How would you summarize what the advertisement is about? Using that summary, how do you think the advertisement logically (logos) sells the product to the consumer? What emotions (pathos) does the advertisement create in you after viewing it? What makes you trust (ethos) the brand in the advertisement or not trust them? Include a link to the advertisement in your post. Make sure to review the Readings and Resources on the use of the rhetorical appeals in the unit. Also, remember to discuss specifically how the advertisement includes logos, ethos, and pathos in your post.
