Question: Imagine that you are now a member of the city council, and you are responding to their letters. Consider the costs and benefits that your peers have highlighted to the initial proposed plan of action. Can you identify issues with their argument? Can you expand or improve on their ideas? How would you ultimately rule if you were in their position, and had to balance visitor wants with animal welfare?
Case Study: Dear city council members,
This letter is in regards to the new taxpayer funds that will be used here at our new zoo exhibit and enclosure. It is my understanding as one of the exhibits designers, that the majority of the funding for this new exhibit should be catered to the desires of the guests and be put ahead of the needs of the animals and the people caring for them. As an exhibit designer I do believe that visitor needs should be met and taken well into consideration and implemented into the design to some degree. Exhibits should be equipped with adequate air conditioning, bathroom facilities, seating/ cooling areas, food and beverage areas and pathways suitable for wheelchairs and strollers should also be implemented. Although this should never be prioritized over the welfare , care and comfort over the different species that live / are housed in these enclosures or the staff that work endlessly night after night and day after day to ensure that these needs / necessities are met. Some of our species housed here are even endangered and or at risk of becoming endangered and it is our facility's duty to ensure that does not happen. Our job is to keep our animals safe , well secured , housed in the very best enclosures that are big enough for each species , fed, enriched, and have the proper medical care and staff available to do so. Cutting back on cost to prioritize visitors' desires, means less funds for these mandatory needs for our animals . If we were to completely ignore those necessities and turn our attention to ensure that the visitors' needs are taken way more into consideration then our animals then our philosophy and goal here turns into a complete hypocrisy. Our main philosophy and goal here is to educate the public and community , inspire individuals & other organizations, and save our animals. Inspiring future generations to continue the fight for wildlife conservation is crucial. I truly hope this letter helps with the reconsideration into the decision for our funding.
