Assignment 1 - Participation Activity: SPSS 1
Instructions - The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with an opportunity to learn how to use SPSS through a practical application. For the participation activities SPSS 1 and SPSS 2, you will work with the results of a parent survey. An abbreviated version of the parent survey instrument is attached below. The survey was administered in SurveyMonkey and the results exported to an Excel file (SPSS_1).
To complete the SPSS 1 participation activity, complete the following tasks.
A. Open and review the Excel file, "SPSS_1."
B. Open SPSS and import the "SPSS_1" Excel file.
C. Save the imported file as an SPSS file with the name, "Parent_Survey_1".
D. Go to data view and review the database by scrolling through the cases.
E. Go to variable view and complete the following:
1. In the "Name" field, rename each variable to correspond with the question numbers on the survey instrument (see below). For example, the variable that imports as, "Duringthe20152016academicschoolyearmyoldeststudentis" should be renamed as "Q1." The comment field for Q5 can be renamed as, "Q5_Comment." You can leave "StartDate" and "EndDate" as is.
2. Insert a descriptive label for each variable.
3. For Questions 4 and 5, change variable type from string to numeric.
4. For Questions 4 and 5, create variable labels according to the following:
a. Strongly Disagree = 1
b. Disagree = 2
c. Agree = 3
d. Strongly Agree = 4
e. Prefer not to answer = 5
F. Save the SPSS file.
Remember that the original Excel file serves as master file. If you make a mistake creating in the process, you can return to the original Excel file and import it again. For the participation activity SPSS 2, you will continue working with the "Parent_Survey_1" database. You are not required to submit or post the SPSS database.
Dear Parent, Thank you for taking the time to fill out this survey! The results of this survey will be used to determine areas of improvement for Southwest School (SWS).
Please fill out the survey for your oldest student enrolled at SWS.
This survey should not take more than 10 minutes of your time to complete. We appreciate your effort in helping us improve ASA for your student and their future!

Assignment 2 - Participation Activity: SPSS 2
Instructions - This activity builds upon the SPSS-1 activity in Module 10. For this assignment, you will build upon the "Parent_Survey_1" SPSS database that you created in SPSS-1. This assignment relates to the skills introduced in Greene and Salkind, Units 3-5. To complete the SPSS 2 participation activity, complete the following tasks.
A. Convert Q6 from string to numeric and add the following value labels
1. Strongly Disagree = 1
2. Disagree = 2
3. Agree = 3
4. Strongly Agree = 4
5. Prefer not to answer = 5
B. Compute the new variable "Academic_Focus" where,
1. Academic_Focus = Q4 + Q5 + Q6.
C. For all variables Q1-Q9, including "Academic_Focus" (except Q_5_Comments), run frequency distribution tables. Consider the following:
1. Using the Generalization, Example, Exception framework, how would you summarize the results of the frequency tables?
2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of coding "Prefer Not to Answer" = 5? From a measurement standpoint, does "Prefer Not to Answer" equal 5 on the same scale as the other responses?
3. What other options might you consider for coding the "Prefer Not to Answer" values?
D. Run descriptive statistics for the numeric variables (quantitative) variables Q4, Q5, Q6 and Academic Focus. Consider what additional statistics are available with numeric variables that are not available with string (qualitative) variables.
E. Review the frequency distribution table for the variable "Academic_Focus" and conduct the following:
1. How many cases are included in the variable? How many are missing? In your opinion, is system_missing count high?
2. Examine if the system missing values are higher in some grade levels over others. Split the file by Q1 (grade oldest child attends). Run the frequency distribution table for "Academic_Focus" again. From these results, does it appear that parents with students enrolled in some grade levels were more likely to not answer than others?
3. Turn off the split file.
4. What is your conclusion about the quality of this item?
F. Delete the "Academic_Focus"variable.
G. In variable view, find the "Missing" column and set the value 5 (Prefer Not to Answer) to Missing for variables Q4, Q5 and Q6.
H. Re-compute and label "Academic_Focus" again per the instructions in step B and run a frequency distribution table for the recomputed "Academic_Focus" variable.
I. Recode "Academic_Focus" into a new variable labeled, "Academic_Focus_Level" where,
1. Academic_Focus_Level = 1, if "Academic_Focus" = 6-9
2. Academic_Focus_Level = 2, if "Academic_Focus" = 10-11
J. Create value labels for the "Academic_Focus_Level" variable where,
1. 1 = Low
2. 2 = High
K. Run a frequency table for the variable "Q5_Comments" and consider the following:
1. How many parents provided an answer to the item?
2. How many did not provide an answer?
3. How many of the answers were not-applicable to the prompt?
4. What is your opinion of how well this open-ended item worked as a data collection tool?
L. Delete the working output file and run the frequency tables and descriptive statistics again to produce a clean output file.
M. Save the SPSS file and output.
Remember that the original Excel file serves as master file. If you make a mistake creating in the process, you can return to the original Excel file and import it again. There is a complete "Parent_Survey_1" file available in Module 11. The purpose of these activities, however, are for you to learn how to use SPSS on your own, which means making and correcting mistakes. Therefore, refrain from relying on the complete database until you have exhausted your abilities.
