1.) In your own words, what are the three (3) most important lessons that the international community should have learned about economic sanctions from the Kimberley Process experience? Explain why each of the three lessons are important.

2.) How would you respond to claims by critics that the Kimberley Process is not a good model for other economic sanctions programs? The critics base their claims on:

(a) the nature of Sierra Leone - a small country in a region of the world where the major powers had few national interests at stake;

(b) the nature of the diamond trade which is dominated by a small number of countries; and (b) the nature of the demand for diamonds - public opinion in the West supported restrictions on blood diamonds, something that might not be the case for non-luxury commodities like oil, timber and industrial minerals, which are also illegally exported by rebel groups in other countries.
