NS70140X Leading and Managing the Delivery of Person-centred Care - Level 7
PG DIP Mental Health nursing.
Scenario for mental health students
Mark is 20. He has been admitted to an acute in-patient ward after being brought in on a section 136 by the police. He was found wandering in the street, shouting at random passers-by about the FBI. He was eating food from bins, was barefoot and shirtless despite the winter weather. While in the 136 Suite, he was assessed by two doctors and an approved mental health practitioner and was placed on section 2 of the Mental Health Act 1983.
He is clearly dirty and unkempt, smells unwashed and has a number of cuts on his feet and hands (not self-inflicted). He gave the police his name and they discovered he'd been reported missing five days ago by his parents, with whom he lives. He told the psychiatrist he was being followed and watched by FBI agents. He knows they are following him because he can hear their voices in his head, talking about him and making comments on his actions. Sometimes, they tell him what to do and he is finding it increasingly difficult to resist their commands. He is frightened, confused and disorientated, believing he is in prison. He says he hasn't slept for two nights. He has no belongings with him other than the clothes he has on, no money: no phone, no keys and no shoes. His parents are aware he was taken to hospital and are extremely worried about him. The admission paperwork has been completed, he is willing and able to talk.
