Assessment Task - ESSAY
Details of Task: Write an individual essay based on ONE of the TWO topics. CHOOSE your own topic.
- After selecting ONE (1) of the case studies presented to you below, you are to write a 1500 word essay (+/- 10% is allowed).
- Your essay should include analysis and synthesis of research. You are required to reference a minimum of five academic sources (e.g., textbooks, articles).
In your essay, you will assume the role of a counsellor who has received a client referral (referrals are provided below). You have not yet met this client.
Your essay should critically reflect on how communication with Kirra/Mr Tanaka take place.
Your essay should address the following:
- How would you develop rapport with the client?
- What communication strategies would you employ to facilitate effective communication, and how would you implement these strategies?
- What do you believe to be some barriers, such as socio-cultural factors, to effective communication with this client? How will you overcome these barriers?
- What ethical considerations are present in this case?
- Consider at least 3 other health professionals you may communicate with regarding your client's healthcare? What ethical considerations are present when communicating with other health professionals? What are some challenges that could arise from this interprofessional communication?
Select one (1) of the following topics for the essay.
1. Case Study 1 - Kirra has been referred to you by her GP who has expressed concern regarding Kirra's weight and mood. Although you have not yet met Kirra, you have been provided with a written referral by the GP.
2. Case Study 2 - Mr Tanaka has been referred to you by his GP, who has expressed concern regarding Mt Tanaka's rehabilitation and mood. Although you have not yet met Mr Tanaka, you have been provided with a written referral by the GP.
Case Study 1 -
What is the client's cultural background? Client's mother identifies as Welsh/Australian, Client's father is of Indigenous Australian descent.
Who do they live with? Client lives with mother, younger brother, and stepfather.
Education/employment status? Client is currently studying part-time and has a casual job.
Is the client aware and consented to the referral and wanting treatment? Client consents but remains hesitant about seeking treatment.
Case Study 2 -
What is the client's cultural background? Client is Japanese Australian.
Who do they live with? Client is currently living with son, son's wife, and their two young children.
Education/employment status? Mr Tanaka is retired.
Is the client aware and consented to the referral and wanting treatment? Client is reluctant and sceptical regarding counseling.
