Homework: Juvenile Delinquency and Justice- Combating Juvenile Delinquency
Answer the following questions using well-developed sentences or short paragraphs, using your own words.
I. Examine two local programs that address juvenile delinquency and their strategies, partnerships, and influence on at-risk youth in your community.
Note: If no local program is available, explore programs from outside your community.
II. Propose two to three innovative ways to enhance and improve the effectiveness of the two local programs you chose to examine.
Consider this: Put yourself in the shoes of your 16-year-old self, but imagine you are facing significant challenges and heading down a troubled path. How would you design the ideal program that would have worked best to get through to you and help you personally to steer away from delinquency?
III. Explore the challenges schools encounter daily in fostering positive student behavior and ensuring safety for students, teachers, and staff.
Consider this: Think about safety on both large (i.e. gun violence) and small (i.e. bullying, physical altercations, social media interactions) scales. Also, consider the potential of extracurricular activities (such as sports, clubs, music, art, etc.) in benefiting the school and preventing student behavioral issues.
IV. Investigate how exposure to substance abuse and mental health challenges among family members within the home can affect the juvenile's behavior, academic performance, and social interactions.
Consider this: How can a juvenile who wants to make positive changes break the cycle of substance abuse in their family? Could therapy for the juvenile be helpful, or would it be more effective if the whole family was in therapy together?
