Description:

The idea is that answers and replies will keep the discussion moving forward and not just repeat the same answers and information. Therefore, students need to ensure they have read their assigned discussion forum before they post to make sure what they post is a useful contribution to the overall conversation. Student discussion should go beyond restating what is said in scientific and news articles and instead demonstrate an ability to assess literature and integrate related concepts.

Discussion #1: Coming into this course, how would you define the Canadian North? Have any of your previous perceptions of the North changed after week 1?

Discussion #2: After reading about the Ice Free Corridor and Coastal Migration Route theories, which argument do you think is more plausible?

Discussion #3: What push and pull factors might encourage you to consider moving to the North? Now, pretend you are a Laurier grad who has taken a job in Yellowknife and now after a year of employment you are considering a job opportunity back in Waterloo. What would be the push and pull factors that would make you consider the move back south?

Discussion #4: After reading through the reports linked to in the lecture notes on the relocation of High Arctic groups, share your thoughts on the key arguments for and against relocation.

Discussion #5: After reading through this material on the pipelines - what do you feel is the potential of developing these deposits? Do you think economic returns outweigh the potential impacts on social and environmental systems? Also consider how the viewpoints of First Nations towards economic development may have changed since the Berger Report. This has led to conflicts between various northern groups.
